Frequently asked questions

What are hospital cash prices?

Cash prices (also called self-pay or discounted prices) are the rates a facility charges when you pay directly without insurance. Federal rules require US providers to publish them, but most patients never see them in advance.

How much can prices vary for the same procedure?

A lot. For one and the same CPT code, prices can vary by 100 times or more between providers in the same metro. Ten Chicago hospitals publish an IUD insertion (CPT 58300) at anywhere from $17.50 to $9,043 — a 517x spread, all of it published by the hospitals themselves.

Where does the data come from?

Every figure is pulled from CMS-mandated transparency files that providers publish under federal law. We refresh these files regularly so the rates you see reflect what the facility currently posts.

Is it really free?

Yes. Browsing prices, searching procedures, and viewing results costs nothing. No account, no email, no credit card. We only contact you if you reach out first.

Does this work without insurance?

Yes. Self-pay rates are designed for patients without coverage, those on high-deductible plans, or anyone who simply wants to pay directly. You do not need any insurance to use this tool.
